Means of Production:
SURFACE SANDING
SECTION
The Sanding Area is where parts which need to be
prepared prior to painting are dealt with.
This process involves surface treatment for materials
which pose problems for normal painting processes.
Sanding is performed with automatic sanding machines when part shape permits.
Nooks and crannies which the machines are unable to
access are sanded by hand.
The sanding area is located in an independent building
so as to prevent any contamination of the painting areas.
PART CLEANING SECTION
Due to high demands in terms of aesthetic quality and
the importance of the cleanliness of products which are
later to be painted, COLPLAST has an automatic washing
tunnel which ensures parts are clean and reduces product
handling.
In order to ensure effective cleaning, parts pass through
40ºC water baths with alkaline solutions and a final bath
in demineralised water.
This process ensures optimum cleanliness and
specification compliance when parts leave the drying
oven.
PP SURFACE
TREATMENT SECTION
COLPLAST also has great experience treating materials
such as PP prior to painting.
And SMC, too. Due to its
production without previous surface treatment, this material
poses adherence problems which need to be solved through
treatment. This treatment consists of Flaming
the entire surface to break bonds and activate the surface for painting.
COLPLAST possesses installations for this process and
means by which to verify correct flaming by measuring
surface tension with dyes.
PART PAINTING
SECTION:
Painting preparation:
Parts need to be prepared with solvents and catalysers before paint is applied.
Once the mixture has been made, it is of the utmost
importance to make sure that the viscosity obtained
complies with the specifications set out.
Correct viscosity is to a great extent the determining
factor behind a good application and good product finish.
Paint section lines 1 and 2.
When the part has been treated (both surface treatment
and cleaning) and the paint has been mixed, the product
can be painted.
Before the application of the colour, a base application (first sizing...) is required. This application improves
adherence and colour covering.
The base must be applied properly because if it is not
uniform, the application of the colour may be affected.
The process between the priming coat and the colour
coat can be performed wet on wet or dry on dry. As the
words suggest, one involves applying the two coats one
after the other (wet on wet) and the other calls for drying
between coats.
